Jamestown is burning! Many factors led with the revolt of Nathaniel Bacon and his followers in 1675. Men, women, and children are moving westward in droves. Men must own property to vote. The only way to get property and good farmland is to take it from the Native Americans
“Our population is exploding and we need good farmland. Our only solution is to go west,” cried James Smith.
“I agree with you, but what about the Native Americans?’ questioned Jacob Clark
“Hopefully we can live side by side, but our main concern is our growing families and our loyalty to the king.” Protested James Smith.
“We want to buy land along the coast, but the tobacco planters bought most of the land. We are forced to work for the wealthier farmers. Our problem is without land we can’t vote. I agree with James.” Stated Samuel Dixon.
Most of the young men of the colonies agreed to go west. They realized it was their last opportunity to survive in this new land. As they moved inland much fighting broke out with the Native Americans.
“Many people are being killed on both sides. I think the governor should help us against the Native Americans. He refuses because he is benefiting from the fur trade.” Shouted Nathaniel Bacon
Many colonists were frustrated and angry when the governor would not step in to help the settlers. Nathaniel Bacon organized a force of 1,000 westerners . They killed many Native Americans. The governor declared Bacon and his followers as rebels. Bacon was so angered by the government’s statement, he burned Jamestown to the ground. The governor was forced to run away.
"Unfortunately, Nathaniel Bacon is sick and about to die." Cried Samuel Dixon
"Our revolt collapsed and the governor will retaliate." Declared James Smith
The governor hanged twenty three of Nathaniel Bacon's crew. Yet this was not enough too halt the English settlers from expanding onto Native American lands. Many Native Americans died fighting or from diseases contracted from the English settlers.
